WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF A RELAPSE?

Relapse is a reality that many individuals in recovery face, and it can be a challenging experience for both the person struggling with addiction and their family members. It’s important to recognize the signs of relapse early, so that a response can be implemented that offers support without enabling destructive behaviour.

WARNING SIGNS OF RELAPSE
Relapse doesn’t always happen overnight. It is often a gradual process, where certain behaviours or signs begin to emerge before the actual return to substance use. By identifying these signs early, family members can step in to offer support before the situation escalates.

Withdrawal from Family and Support Networks
What to Look For: The person in recovery might start pulling away from family members, friends, or support groups. They may become less communicative or avoid social interactions that are typically positive.

Increased Mood Swings or Irritability
What to Look For: Sudden mood swings, irritability, or a noticeable change in demeanour may be red flags. They could become more defensive, angry, or withdrawn.

Engaging in Old Habits or Behaviours
What to Look For: Returning to past habits like associating with old friends who were part of their substance use, frequenting places tied to past drinking or drug use, or showing an increased desire for risky behaviour.

Neglecting Self-Care and Responsibilities
What to Look For: The person may start neglecting their personal hygiene, sleeping patterns, nutrition, or work/school responsibilities. A lack of interest in self-care can be an indicator that they are emotionally or mentally withdrawing from their recovery process.

Increased Denial or Rationalisation
What to Look For: The person may begin to deny that they are experiencing difficulties or rationalize behaviors that are risky or uncharacteristic of their recovery. For example, they might claim that they can “handle just one drink” or that they’re “doing better now".

Sudden Changes in Thought or Attitude Toward Recovery
What to Look For: A shift in perspective on the importance of recovery may occur. The person may express feelings of hopelessness about recovery or even state that they are “tired” of trying to stay sober.
